Registered Nurse and Psychotherapist

In the 30+ years of Carmen’s Nursing practice she has been privileged to walk alongside countless heroes who have taught her about the lived experience of health, illness and recovery. Carmen has accompanied people in the hospital and their home while they received medical surgical, intensive, palliative or mental health care. In the past 15 years, Carmen has focused her practice on supporting the mental wellbeing and recovery of individuals, families and communities through direct care, teaching and advocacy work.

Carmen obtained her Bachelor of Science of Nursing at Université de Montréal, her Master’s of Science in Nursing at Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Ottawa.

Carmen continues to pursue training in counselling/psychotherapy modalities such as CBT, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Trauma Informed Care. Carmen is also a professor who teaches to her passion Mental Health and Wellbeing.

She is a published researcher and her most recent focus of research has been the lived experience of university nursing students with mental health concerns. She has learned much about how stigma and stresses in an environment contribute to mental wellbeing. Carmen is committed to developing curricula that foster mental wellbeing and advocating for the mental wellbeing of all. She sits on the board of the Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses and other boards in hope of advocating for better mental health care and systems that nurture recovery.
